In this article, a new simply designed 7-DOF haptic device, PATHOS II is proposed for 1-DOF gripping and 6-DOF manipulation. The merits of a parallel type haptic device such as high sti ness and accuracy are natural characteristics of PATHOS-II with optimized workspace. Due to its unique symmetric structure, the isotropic manipulability is enhanced within the reachable workspace. This parallel type haptic device can be used in applications which need high resolution, sti ness and isotropic manipulability.

Design Of A New 6-DOF Parallel Haptic Device

In this paper, a new 6-dof parallel haptic master device is proposed. Many existing haptic devices require large power due to having floating actuator and also have small workspaces. The proposed new mechanism is relatively light by employing non-floating actuators and has large workspace. Kinematic analysis and kinematic optimal design problem is performed for this mechanism. Dexterous workspa...

Singularity-Free Algorithms and Design Scheme for a New 6-DOF Parallel Haptic Device

It is known that parallel-type mechanisms have many singularities than serial-type mechanisms. In haptic application, these singularities deteriorate the system performance generating reflecting force. Moreover, different from general manipulators, haptic systems can’t avoid the singular point, because they are operated by user’s random command. Although many singularity-free algorithms for ser...

Isotropy and Actuator Optimization in Haptic Interface Design

A haptic interface controlled in impedance mode should present its user with a uniform force capability matching the human hand. This paper reviews a mechanism design methodology that maximizes a workspace-inclusive isotropy index. Force maximization in coreless or voice-coil motors is also considered in order to maximize haptic interface acceleration. Example designs of a planar 3-DOF haptic m...

Design and Kinematic Analysis of a 4-DOF Serial-Parallel Manipulator for a Driving Simulator

This paper presents the kinematic analysis and the development of a 4-degree-of-freedom serial-parallel mechanism for large commercial vehicle driving simulators. The degrees of freedom are selected according to the target maneuvers and the structure of human motion perception organs. Several kinematic properties of parallel part of the mechanism under study are investigated, including the inve...

Quantitative Performance Analysis of Haptic Devices with Parallelogram Subsystems

Parallel-architecture haptic devices offer significant advantages over serial-architecture counterparts in applications requiring high stiffness and high accuracy. To this end, many haptic devices have been created and deployed by modularly piecing together several serial-chain arms to form an in-parallel system. Furthermore, recent haptic devices design such as the Sensable’s PHANToM Premium l...
